Overview of Fisher House™ Program

A Fisher House™ is a home away from home for families and caregivers of veterans and active duty military receiving treatment at major military and VA medical facilities. Fisher House accommodations are provided at no cost to guests and located within walking distance of the treatment facility.

Fisher Houses provide temporary accommodations at no cost for veterans, active-duty Military, their families and caregivers while receiving treatment through a military or VA Medical Facility. Having family members and caregivers being able to stay with their wounded service members in this difficult time is a huge benefit to both the warriors or veterans and their families.

Northside Church Ministry to Fisher Houses™

Our mission is to provide encouragement and support to our wounded warriors and families receiving care at San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) and the VA Fisher House. The Northside family has been preparing breakfast at the SAMMC Fisher Houses since May 2007. Currently, approximately six volunteers sign up once a month to help provide encouragement and support to the wounded warriors and families receiving care at San Antonio Military Medical Center. Breakfast is also provided for the warriors in the barracks behind the Fisher Houses.

In addition, the ministry occasionally provides meals at the VA Fisher Houses in the Medical Center. Most recently these have been catered box lunches, but we hope to resume breakfast service once a quarter there as well. One of the ministries special activities each year is providing a holiday party during the Christmas season in which Angel Tree gifts are given to the residents at SAMMC Fisher Houses, and embroidered blankets to the veterans and families at the VA.
